A course that prepares you for industry
The thing I like about my course is that it combines different engineering disciplines, all adapted to suit the maritime industry. The aspects that stand out to me most are the career opportunities and the quality of teaching. There’s also a lot of input from people in the industry, including guest speakers, which really helps to enhance the course.
I also enjoy learning from lecturers with such varied backgrounds. They specialise in different areas and bring a wide range of industry insights and experiences, which means we learn a lot beyond the normal curriculum.
The course is very versatile - you develop knowledge that can be applied across lots of different disciplines and the career aspects are great too!
Making the most of student life
I’ve really enjoyed getting involved in a range of social activities, particularly through societies which offer fun, and more relaxed sober events that don’t revolve around drinking.
I’ve joined the Game Dev Society and the Newcastle Raiders American Football Club, and I’ve really enjoyed the sense of community that comes with being part of a team. Spending time together both on and off the field has helped me build some good friendships.
Newcastle might be a compact city, but there’s so much to do and so many places to see and explore.
Supported every step of the way
Student support at the University has been excellent - there’s always someone available when I need help, always putting me first and making sure I feel comfortable and supported.
There’s also a great range of academic and career support, including opportunities to attend networking events like OCEANS and hear from guest speakers in the maritime industry. This has helped me better understand the field and explore future career paths.
Speaking with lecturers who specialise in my field has helped solidify my ambitions - I can see myself working in marine engineering, hopefully with autonomous underwater vessels.
