About Aung
I’m Aung, a master’s student from Myanmar. I chose to study at Newcastle as it’s part of the Russell Group, which means it’s one of the most prestigious universities in the UK.
Newcastle has provided me with somewhere safe to live, as well as being a great place to study, and lots of fun too!
My first time coming to Newcastle was after a trip to London. The city is beautiful with amazing bridges going over the Tyne River.
Student life at Newcastle
I’d describe my course as exciting, inclusive, dynamic and creative. This subject is the epitome of addressing global challenges, which is why it appeals to me. The University is home to brilliant researchers in this area – The Future Mobility group are shaping transport systems while tackling challenges like decarbonisation.
When I’m not in lectures, I love to hang out in the student common rooms. Sometimes I’ll use these spaces to chat with other students, but other days I’ll just sit and study by myself.
What really surprised me is how many fun events the Students' Union organise.
I enjoyed attending the Freebie Fair where big brands gave out free food and vouchers. I also loved going to the Volunteer Fair and Student Career Fair as I met lots of different people.
Supporting my studies and my future
The School of Engineering and my personal tutor have provided me with lots of support throughout my studies. After I graduate, I want to work in transport management as a transport engineer. The Careers Service is amazing, and the team recommended how I could improve my CV.
If you were to ask me what my favourite memory is of Newcastle, I’d say seeing the first snow on campus. As a student coming from tropical weather, this experience was a dream of mine.
