Your Academic Experience 2026-27

Find the key information you need to inform your academic experience for the academic year 2026-27.

The 2026 student academic experience

This information outlines our approach to support, teaching and assessment for new and continuing students in the 2026-27 academic year. It also signposts you to other more in-depth online information.

What will teaching be like in 2026-27?

All students studying on an on-campus programme will receive in-person teaching. Where online and digital options enhance the student experience, or have been requested by our students, we will continue to use them to benefit their learning.

How will my degree be assessed?

You can be confident that all programmes fairly assess the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during your degree. Assessment approaches will vary by degree programme and the needs of external bodies. In-person invigilated summative examinations are just one of the ways in which we assess.

For more information on the approaches to assessment for your programme, contact your School.

Keeping you up to date

We’ve designed an induction programme to welcome you into our friendly student community. Please look out for email communications about this.

Head to our Welcome webpages to see the steps you need to take before coming to Newcastle. Please note this information will be updated during the summer for the 2026-27 academic year. There is helpful information about arranging travel, managing your wellbeing when studying in the UK and Newcastle, confirming accommodation, our airport meet and greet service, and immigration so please read through carefully.

Once you’ve started your programme, look out for the regular student newsletters which will keep you up to date with the latest University news, events and opportunities. You can also bookmark the Student Homepage where you will find useful links and resources.

Term dates for 2026–27

The 2026-27 academic year starts on Monday 21 September 2026. All students must aim to arrive on campus in Newcastle by 21 September for the start of Semester 1. Some courses may have an earlier start date, if this applies to you your academic school at the University will write to you to confirm this.

You can start the registration process online before you arrive. Information is available on our Student Welcome pages. Please note this information will be updated for the 2026-27 academic year on 1 August.

However, if you are going to be late due to delays caused by issues such as immigration or travel delays, arrival up until Monday 12 October 2026 may be possible depending on your degree programme and subject to approval. To seek approval for a late arrival please submit this form. We will contact you within two working days to update you on your request.

Students can still complete their registration if necessary after they arrive, but they must be able to attend classes from the latest arrival date approved by the University.

When can I arrive?

Moving-in day is always an exciting time and in September thousands of new students join us.

To allow for a smooth and safe arrival, you may be required to book an arrival slot (depending on your allocated housing). You can do this through your accommodation induction (available around two weeks prior to your arrival) or, if you're living in one of our managed partnership accommodation sites, through your provider's portal after you've accepted your contract.

University-owned accommodation key dates:

  • International students: Slots available from 14 September
  • UK students: Slots are available from 17–20 September

Early arrivals: Unfortunately, earlier move-in dates are not available. Further information will be available on our website in due course.
