About Samantha
I'm an undergraduate student studying Media, Communication and Cultural Studies BA. I chose to study at Newcastle University because I liked the university campus. There's also a wide range of sports, societies and academic support.
I'm from Ecuador and my main motivations to study abroad were the broad opportunities that came with studying overseas. I discovered that having the opportunity to be able to learn everyday, not only in class, but from day to day life is very enriching for me.
Newcastle University has helped me realise my future by granting me the opportunity of putting myself in activities I wouldn’t normally do.
Societies and activities
One of my favourite memories in Newcastle University is with the swim team. I joined the swim team this year after not swimming for a long while but as soon as I joined, I made lifelong friends that can make even the smallest moment the most memorable.
Being an international student home sickness can be very difficult, however, friends become your family. The people who I’ve met on the team have genuinely given me that home away from home environment I really needed. I am so grateful to have found them.
Studying as an international student
Coming from Ecuador, where friendliness and bonds are so engrained within my Latino culture, it was so reliving and touching to see how even though this was a brand new environment I wasn’t used to, I still managed to find amazing friends.
For me the social aspect of Newcastle is the most welcoming there is. From my first day here I have felt welcomed and appreciated by all people I have talked to. It’s very easy to make friends and there is lots of amazing activities around the city one can do for fun!
One of my favourite places to go to is Tynemouth with my friends, I love being on the beach sitting around a fire. Newcastle is a very joyous city, there is always something happening. I’ve learned so many new things about me and had the chance to meet many amazing people. The city is beautiful with breath taking nature and also that mix of city life.
