International Multimedia Journalism MA
Growing up in the North East, Newcastle was my dream university. I thought it would be a fitting way to close out my last year of education.
I always knew that I wanted to study journalism after my undergraduate in order to gain more experience in the field before I started applying to jobs. However, I wasn't sure what type of journalism. I therefore joined The Courier to have a go at a range of topics. I kept gravitating towards sports, so it was obvious where I was passionate about. Most of the work in my degree has covered local topics, whether that be sports, news or music stories.
This is why I'm glad that I picked Newcastle, I'm able to write about my hometown, which is greatly underrepresented in the media. Newcastle was a great final stepping stone to reaching my dream job, and I've learnt a great deal of both educational and life lessons that have prepared me for the future.
My favourite part of my course
I loved that the lecturers are particularly passionate about their topics. As we were quite a nice-sized cohort, I felt like I really got to know them, which made their modules more memorable.
Additionally, choosing and working on my own multimedia stories was also great. This included packaging everything together and seeing how the final piece looks. It's even better to share these with my course mates for feedback before submission.
Unique opportunities to gain experience in the field
I was lucky enough to gain multiple work opportunities including:
- writing for The Courier newspaper
- co-hosting a football podcast through NSR
- being the station manager of NUTV
The latter of these was a daunting task to take on two months arriving at the university, but it's one that I will cherish. I ran multiple live productions, including Fight Night, Candidates Rally and Varsity.
My favourite memory was the Newcastle-Northumbria Varsity. It was an exceptionally fun day. I got to livestream and commentate on a football match, then write coverage of the rugby finale at Kingston Park.
My aspiration is to become a sports journalist and to cover the Olympic Games. I am starting my dream role soon as a trainee journalist at BBC Sport.
