Global Film MA
About Ananya
The UK has had a big influence on the global film industry. I wanted to absorb that rich history of filmmaking, curation and exhibition, as well as all the vibrant culture that the country has to offer. My study abroad dreams were made possible by Newcastle University offering me the India Innovation and Leadership scholarship to study at their renowned film department.
I’ve had access to resources like the Robinson Library, the Culture Lab, and the Language Resource Centre. And thanks to the research strengths of Newcastle, I’ve been able to explore aesthetic, intellectual and historical viewpoints during my course.
A practical film studies course
The MA Global Film provides industry knowledge on exhibition, curation, and distribution of films, plus courses in practical filmmaking aspects such as screenwriting. The degree has helped me improve my academic writing, film critiquing, and reviewing skills. We’ve done close readings of films, which is a very thorough and interesting experience.
The three final project pathways really stood out to me in this degree. You can choose a dissertation, a student film or an independent project – all relevant choices for a career in the industry.
Exploring the city’s cinemas
The city’s architecture is beautiful. Thanks to my scholarship, I had a wider choice of accommodation I could afford. I live in walking distance of most things Newcastle has to offer, such as parks, restaurants and film screening spaces. The cultural experiences on offer make for a fun social life and plenty of opportunities for networking.
The city turned out to be bigger than I thought it would be! The city centre excites me the most, as it houses the Tyneside Cinema, my favourite local film theatre to visit.
Student services has helped me feel extremely welcomed and understood.
My professors have been really helpful. Speaking to them and finding out more about their backgrounds has led me to discover more pathways and job opportunities than I thought existed before coming here. It’s also given me the confidence to keep pursuing my interests. A lot of my professors are working as both scholars and industry professionals and also working to make the film industry a better place.
Careers after graduation
In future, I see myself pursuing a PhD to further my knowledge in my area of research. I would also love to work with film festivals on programming and continue making nonfiction films alongside my research.
For anyone interested in watching and reviewing films, this is a perfect degree! It offers a good balance of both theory and practical elements, with the choices for the final submission providing a lot of freedom to follow your own interests.
