Why I chose Newcastle University
I chose Newcastle University because I knew people who already studied there and spoke highly of their experience. I had also heard good things about the social life and welcoming community, which made it feel like a place where I could settle in easily.
The university offered Film and Media, a creative course that some other universities did not provide. I also wanted the experience of moving to a new city where I did not already know many people. I felt it would give me the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
About my course
Film and Media is a creative, collaborative and hands-on degree. With it being coursework-based assignments, the course encourages creative exploration rather than exam-style tests. The course is often a small group of students compared to other academic driven courses. This makes it easier to build friends and form a tight-knit community of like-minded creatives.
It offers a range of amazing module options, whether you want to explore the route of film and cinema or delve into a more media-based path. Assignments include making individual or group films and exploring the use of industry grade camera equipment. It truly encourages you to explore unique ideas, develop knowledge of film and build skills essential for a future career in the Film and Media industry.
Throughout my course, I had the same group of incredible lecturers. It really helped me feel supported and comfortable within my time at the university.
Student support services
I have really appreciated the wellbeing support services at Newcastle University. The service provides one-to-one sessions with a specialised counsellor. I have found especially helpful during stressful exam periods, or when needing advice and support with personal situations.
Societies and social activities
During my first two years of university, I thrived from being part of a society. In the first year, I was part of the ski society where I made some amazing friends and went on university trips.
I loved the weekly social events where there are themed dress codes and fun nights out. In the second year, I joined the Pole and Ariel society which was something I had always wanted to try.
The university offers such amazing opportunities with their wide range of societies. I always encourage people who are joining to get involved and push themselves out their comfort zone because it might be the best thing they ever do.
How Newcastle helped me realise my future
With the freedom and creativity in my degree, it let me explore different opportunities to realise what I feel passionate about. With my course, I had the chance to volunteer in North East International Film Festival (NEIFF). This provided me with the chance to learn more about independent documentary filmmaking.
During lectures we had talks from guest speakers with different career paths. This opportunity offered me a greater insight into what careers I like the sound of and which paths I wouldn’t consider.
