About Mia

I'm an undergraduate student studying BSc Environmental Science. One of the main reasons I chose to study at Newcastle University was the love of the city and campus. They were both big draws about me coming to university here.

There is also a great variety of activities to take part in. In and around Newcastle, from exploring Tynemouth and Jesmond to enjoying the nightlife and food. Plus, it’s easy to walk around and accessible. I also enjoy the field trips included in the Environmental Science course.

I’ve developed fieldwork skills, critical evaluation abilities and lots of teamwork and collaboration through working with my peers.

My favourite thing about the course

My favourite modules have been biodiversity and marine. I also enjoy learning about the physics of the ocean in the Oceans and Climate module which I find fascinating. It provides a detailed understanding of marine ecosystem infrastructure from a physical perspective allowing us to understand the parameters and processes that underpin ocean biology.

When it comes to facilities, I often use the chemistry and computing labs, which allows me to learn using state of the art equipment and technology within the department.

Throughout my course, I have developed a number of skills to prepare me for my future.

Societies and sports

I’m part of the Surf Society and the Open Water Swimming Society, where I’ve made great friends and enjoy lovely Sunday morning swims. I also take part in tennis socials.

Newcastle offers a range of opportunities from a global perspective including the opportunity to study abroad. I was lucky enough to gain a study abroad option and I have a place to study in Melbourne next year.

Student wellbeing

Support is something I feel Newcastle University really values. During my studies, I have a personal tutor who helps and supports me with stress-management and workload. This can be reassuring especially during busy periods.

My advice to you

Consider the course carefully and review the modules in advance. Some include more chemistry than I expected. Make sure you enjoy being outdoors. It’s a diverse course covering everything from Geomapping to RStudio coding and field trips.
