About Yiran
I am a Data Science and AI master’s student from China. I chose to study in the UK as I wanted to broaden my experience and build networks for my future career.
The course at Newcastle stood out to me because of its strong focus on the future of AI, which aligns perfectly with my ambition to become an AI Development Engineer.
The module content and overall course structure offered exactly the blend of theoretical foundations and practical skills I was looking for. My experience so far has more than met my expectations.
Why I chose Newcastle University
The University has many interesting AI research projects. They are crucial for my career development and give students valuable insight into how AI is being applied in real-world contexts.
Through engaging with these projects and the course content, I’ve been able to develop the technical and problem-solving skills needed to be successful in the AI industry.
I was offered a weekly language group course. This provided structured support and gave me more confidence in both academic and social settings.

Funding and support
I received the Vice Chancellor’s Future Leaders Scholarship from the University, which provided me with a 25% fee discount.
Having a scholarship reduced the pressure on my living expenses. This allowed me to focus more on my studies and make the most of the academic and extracurricular opportunities available to me.
Advancing my career
I have enjoyed studying the theories relating to data science and AI at Newcastle University. They've helped me better understand how AI systems work in practice.
I have particularly enjoyed learning the foundations of statistics. This has improved my analytical skills and given me more confidence when working with data.
The School of Computing also offers excellent teaching facilities. This includes well-equipped labs and collaborative learning spaces, which I have made full use of during my time at Newcastle University.
These resources have supported both my independent study and group project work.
Student life
I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the city of Newcastle is. It’s small and compact, with plenty of historic buildings and green spaces to enjoy during your downtime.
The University campus is also very beautiful, with a mix of redbrick buildings and newer, modern buildings, such as the School of Computing.
I really enjoy working and spending time with my classmates outside of lectures. I’ve found it easy to make friends and connect with others on my course, which has made my experience even more enjoyable.
