Why I chose Newcastle University
I chose Newcastle because of the unique elements of the music course, namely the business and social theory / history modules, as well as the incredible facilities and campus.
I've loved making brilliant friendships and having the opportunity to watch everyone's recitals over the years. It's been amazing watching my peers grow in their confidence and musicianship, and watching the final recitals at the end of our third year was really special.
About my course
Contemporary and Popular Music BA allows for an academic understanding of contemporary music, whilst also offering different creative opportunities throughout the degree. You get to specialise in the things you're most interested in by final year, meaning you can really get the most out of your course.
It's supportive of all musical backgrounds, meaning everyone is in the same boat! I had a very supportive cohort of students and lecturers, and have loved my time doing this degree.
I was surprised by how close knit the course was, and by the number of performance opportunities offered throughout the city.
Student support services
I have faced a lot of vocal health issues during my time at Newcastle University, which, as a singer, has been a real challenge. I got in contact with BAPAM through the recommendation of the university, which helped me greatly. I also used the wellbeing service during my diagnosis to help me balance my uni work and life throughout this more difficult time.
Societies and social activities
I enjoy working during the offer holder and open days. It's a great way to get further involved with the department and allows prospective students to understand what day-to-day life looks like for a current Newcastle music student.
Alongside my degree I've been a part of the A Cappella society, Women's Rugby, Musical Medics society and Jazz orchestra society (NUJO). I became social media manager for A Capella, and Welfare Officer for NUJO, which were both exciting roles that allowed me to get even more involved in the societies.
I've made amazing friends through my course and societies, which have really contributed to the social side of university. I've found amazing live music nights, pubs and nightlife throughout the city which all offer a great night out!
How Newcastle helped me realise my future
The degree has exposed me to so many different roles within the music industry and has allowed me to work out my passions through trial and error. The societies I have been a part of have grown my confidence and have been a great outlet throughout my university experience - I would love to try and find ways to be a part of similar groups outside of uni.
Hopefully, I’ll continue performing (once I'm in a better place with my vocal health). I'm passionate about performance and access into music, and see myself working in the industry regardless of what path I end up taking.
