I chose Newcastle University because this degree has a great balance of theory-based and practical learning, and I feel I am being given a good skill-base for employment. As someone from the North-East, it is amazing having this opportunity on my doorstep.

Guided and supported at every step

I was given a personal tutor, who has supported me through my first two years of university. He has been a listening ear and has helped me make the most out of my university experience by encouraging me to pursue extra-curricular opportunities, even when university was tough.

Lecturers who go above and beyond

The support from lecturers has been excellent. Whether it's for group projects or basic questions, each of my lecturers has been willing to go the extra mile to help me make the most of my time here. The modules themselves are interesting too and are all linked together in a final project, which makes studying feel more engaging.

A welcoming city

I like the diversity of things to do for students. As someone who isn't into nightlife, there's still plenty for me to do and lots of great people to meet. Being from the North-East, it's also great to study somewhere so familiar to me.

Practical skills for the workplace

The course itself introduces us to software that is needed in the workplace such as CAD. Many of our lecturers are ex-industry, which gives us a valuable insight into working as an engineer.

I’ve been given opportunities to speak to employers at career fairs and have been actively encouraged to pursue a year in industry.

Putting my studies into practice

I will be completing a year in industry with Northumbrian Water, working as an undergraduate engineer to assist in the delivery of capital projects. I hope to gain some practical knowledge of the water sector and help with improving my local environment by putting my university experience into practice. I am also looking forward to working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers from the North-East and learning from each of their experiences.
