Meet Ethan

Civil Engineering MEng

About Ethan

I chose to study at Newcastle University because I’ve lived in Gateshead most of my life. Having access to Newcastle’s facilities and civil engineering opportunities right on my doorstep made it a clear choice. It’s a huge advantage for me.

Support beyond the classroom

My personal tutor has been incredibly supportive since my first year, always taking the time to check in and offer guidance when needed. Our regular catch-ups help me stay motivated, reflect on my academic performance, and discuss any concerns.

It’s never too early to start thinking about industry, placements and graduate roles. I’ve learned how important it is to seek out placements, get involved with ICE groups, attend careers fairs, and take part in field and site trips.

I’ve done summer placements where I gained hands-on experience in engineering surveying and participated in community outreach for social value.

Finding my place at University

This year, I have mostly taken part in the Christian Union and the Fell Walking Society (hiking). I have absolutely loved being a part of them. The Christian society has been so welcoming, and it’s always nice to have a community of people and friends who share your faith.

Being part of the Fell Walking Society has been so fun to meet new people on almost every trip and get to know many unique personalities. My only regret is not joining these societies earlier.

I've also loved being a student ambassador representing my course at recruitment events like Open Days. It’s been a wholesome chance to convey not just how great the Uni is, but my personal experience of the course.

The food options are endless and close to campus. Frankie & Tony’s sandwich bar is my go-to lunch spot!
