How to Apply
Discover how to apply for our short-term global opportunities, along with timelines of what to expect and when.
Step one: Begin your research
The information provided on this website details the global opportunities available for Summer 2027. Make sure you thoroughly review the schedule, location and duration of each programme when considering your options.
The closing date for applications can vary between partners. It’s important to make a note of these deadlines early on so you don’t miss out.
You should consider any additional needs or personal preferences you might have such as the language spoken, the living/working conditions, types of food provided, the level of physical work/activities involved (if any), in-country methods of transport, access to medication or medical services and anything else you would deem important to you.
Speak to the partners if you need any details clarified and make sure to consider any other summer plans or commitments you might have.
Do not proceed with booking travel until you are confident in your choice and you have the go-ahead from your chosen partner.
Step two: Consider how you’ll fund your trip
Whilst there are a range of opportunities available with varying prices, it's important to think about your finances and budget.
The GO Global Scholarship and Sustainable Travel Grant are available to help, however may not cover all costs associated with your summer placement. Remember, you must meet the specific criteria outlined in order to be considered for these.
You can apply for the scholarship without having a programme confirmed. If you are successful, we will reserve your funding for 4 weeks to allow you to secure your chosen programme. If you do not secure a programme within the time given, the funding will be re-allocated to another student.
Even if you aren’t eligible for a scholarship, there are lots of affordable options to choose from. You could also utilise our Student Finance team for help with budgeting and researching other sources of funding.
Step three: Further research
We appreciate that it is a big decision to go abroad, and would encourage you to ask any questions you may have. We're here to help you find out more and feel fully prepared for going abroad:
- chat to one of our student Global Ambassadors via email
- get friendly advice and guidance from a member of staff via our appointment system
- attend a partner information session (listed on the Internships and Volunteering page)
You can also subscribe to our Global Opportunities newsletter and discover all the latest news, blogs and top tips for going abroad.
Step four: You're ready to apply
If you have done your research and feel ready to apply, you'll need to follow the below steps:
1. In order to secure your place on a particular programme, you'll need to make an application directly to the partner. The application process and deadline will differ between organisations, so you'll need to follow the instructions they provide.
2. Once you have your place confirmed by the partner organisation, you will need to register your participation via TerraDotta (if you have already applied for a GO Global Scholarship for 2027, you'll already have started this process!)
This is the university’s placement management system. Registering your participation on TerraDotta is a mandatory part of going abroad and means you will be covered under the University insurance policy and your participation will appear on your Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR).
