Meet Sneha

Masters of Landscape Architecture MLA

About Sneha

I chose to study in the UK because of its strong reputation for high-quality education and its emphasis on practical, industry-focused learning. Studying abroad also gave me the opportunity to gain international experience, improve my professional skills, and learn in a multicultural environment, which I believe is essential for my personal and academic growth.

Sneha

An excellent reputation

I chose Newcastle University because of its strong reputation in landscape architecture, particularly its practical approach to teaching rather than purely theoretical learning. Before applying, I was working remotely at an architecture firm in India, where my chief architect was an alumnus of Newcastle University. Through him, I learned about the high academic standards, studio culture, and professional focus of the programme, which strongly influenced my decision to apply.

A second home feeling

What I love most about Newcastle University is the welcoming and supportive environment. I have met people from many different countries in my course, which has been a valuable cultural experience. The lecturers are friendly, approachable, and always willing to support students, which has helped me feel confident and comfortable in my studies. Over time, the University has started to feel like a second home to me.

What surprised me most about Newcastle was the climate and the variety of food available. I expected the weather to be much harsher, but I found it quite manageable and comfortable, especially compared to what I had imagined before arriving. I was also pleasantly surprised by the wide range of food options in the city, including international cuisines, which made it easier to settle in and feel at home.

Seeking inspiration from my surroundings

I love the site visits around Newcastle and the Northeast, which allow us to apply theory to actual landscapes. The freedom to develop a personal design language through our studio projects is incredibly rewarding.

For fun, I enjoy exploring the local architecture and parks in Newcastle—it's a great city for a landscape architecture student!

I have also joined the Architecture Society. I enjoy the social events and the opportunity to network with students across different year groups who share a passion for design.

The course and facilities

A student should pick this degree if they want to combine art and science to improve the world’s environment.

The MLA is a professional, creative degree that focuses on designing sustainable outdoor spaces and urban environments. It combines ecology, social science, and visual design to tackle real-world climate and urban challenges.

The dedicated studio space in the APL building is a huge highlight; it creates a collaborative environment where you learn as much from your peers and from your tutors. The school’s strong reputation in research-led design really sets it apart in the UK.

Application advice

The process was straightforward but required a strong portfolio that demonstrated creative thinking and technical potential. My top tip is to start your portfolio early and ensure your personal statement clearly explains why you are passionate about the specific MLA program at Newcastle.

Future ambitions

The professional accreditation of the MLA and the industry-focused studio projects have provided the technical skills needed for my career. Support from the Careers Service has also helped me understand the landscape architecture job market in the UK.

I see myself working as a Chartered Landscape Architect in a leading international design firm, focusing on sustainable urban regeneration and public realm projects.
