Meet Daniel

Theoretical Physics MPhys

I chose Newcastle University as the course would give me flexibility in my first year to decide which area of physics I wanted to focus on.

Newcastle is very welcoming and approachable, and wanted to do the most to accommodate my visual impairment. The smaller cohort gives the department a more community feel, meaning you don't get lost in a wash of people.

Financial assistance

Receiving financial assistance from Newcastle really helped me get settled into societies and clubs allowing me to join in and make new friends within the University.

Physics lets you study detail

I've always had an interest in science and knowledge about the world, but I really feel like physics is the subject which lets you study everything to the smallest detail. I really enjoy the vast array of content which we cover and how easy the lecturers are to talk to if you are ever stuck on any problem.

A city of culture

Doing a degree at Newcastle was an obvious choice for me, as it's a university that has a lot of life to it. With it being a campus university in the middle of a city you get the best of both worlds, of having an area just for students, but also an area where it's full of people and you can go and see and do almost anything. Newcastle also has a great mixture of green spaces, historical and cultural centres with a nice helping of night life.

Exploring future options

I would like to do a placement or summer internship to help gain insight into the world of industry, to help make connections and develop my skills.

A career in physics

I feel that the physics course here has prepared me well for a future career in physics. Not only does it teach you all the basics you need to know about physics, from electrons to black holes, it teaches you all the maths that you could possibly ever need, as well as keeping you up to date with the latest computing skills. Mainly in Python, but other languages can be covered in third and fourth years.

But equally, there's a strong careers element in the School. There's a small module where we do some writing on careers, getting to grips with our CVs, thinking about how we can job hunt. So, I'd say it's preparing me well for a career in physics.

Support here at Newcastle

I found the support here at Newcastle to be excellent, with having the disability support team as well as roles such as the Transition Officer and having Student Support Plans (SSPs) for students, it's meant that the ways of getting support here have been easy and very accessible to get to the people that you need to and to get change enacted has been very straightforward and forthcoming.

The Peer Mentor scheme was also great in the first year, so much so that I have become one this year.

Outside of my studies

I take part in the Physics, Astronomy and Chess societies. They have been great at helping me integrate into life in Newcastle and having fun along the way.

My experience in a few words

I'd say my experience here at Newcastle has been a really great time for learning, both in studying my subject of physics and getting to grips with new knowledge and expanding my academic horizons. As well as being able to get a better understanding of myself and gaining more independence and confidence.

Advice to prospective physics students

The advice I'd give to students about studying Physics at Newcastle would be to just go for it, try it out, see what you think. Study hard and make sure that you love the subject as you will be doing a lot of it!
