TV Licensing: what students need to know
TV Licensing has shared key information for students moving house. Learn when a TV Licence is required, when it's not, and how you can pay for it.

If you're moving into new accommodation, you may need to pay for a TV Licence. You need one to watch or record live TV or use BBC iPlayer on any device, including TVs, laptops, or phones.
When you need a licence:
- Student Halls: You need a licence for your room.
- House/Flat Share (separate tenancy): Each student needs their own licence.
- Joint Tenancy Property: One licence covers the entire property.
When you don’t need a licence:
- If you only watch non-live content on platforms like Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+, you don’t need a licence.
- If you don’t watch TV or use BBC iPlayer at all, you’re exempt.
Payment Options:

- One-off payment: £180 per year.
- Quarterly payments: Four payments of £46.25
- Monthly payments: about £30 for six months, then £15
