Update on Law resources, services and the Library

12 June 2025

What's new with the Law Library?

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing Library services and supporting the evolving study needs and preferences of our students, we are moving to a new approach for Law resources and services in 2025-26.

When is the Law Library open in the 2025-26 academic year?

The Law Library will be open Monday – Friday, 10.00-17.00 during teaching and assessment weeks. Opening hours will be updated on the Visiting the Library webpages.

Law students may use any of the Library spaces on campus, including the Philip Robinson Library, which is open 24/7 during term time. Remember to bring your smartcard with you when visiting any of the Library spaces.

If you have any queries about these changes, you can contact the Liaison Team who will be very happy to help you.

Where can I find the print resources I need for my studies?

You can now find key print materials for the study of law in the Philip Robinson Library, including the print books you need for your studies, and some selected reports, reference materials and journals. This move will give you 24/7 term-time access to essential print law resources for the first time. We will also continue to invest in online law materials, including e-textbooks, which can be access anytime, anywhere.

As a result, you may now find print books, reports and journals in more than one location across the library buildings, however it is important to note that the essential print books for taught students will likely be held in the Philip Robinson Library. Please check the location of materials on Library Search

If you need any help locating print materials for law, reach out to our friendly Library team via Library Help.

In addition to the print materials, Newcastle University staff and students are able to access a wide range of legal research materials electronically, including key subject specialist databases such as Westlaw UK, Lexis+ UK and HeinOnline. You can explore and access the key resources from the Law Subject Guide.

Where do I access subject specialist support for my studies?

For more subject specialist support, such as referencing using the OSCOLA style or planning a search for legal research, you can contact your Academic Liaison Team for Law at any time. You can also access support from our specialist Academic Skills Team for support in developing your study skills, including on writing, notetaking, time management and preparing for exams.  Contact us through Library Help or book a one-to-one appointment with either team, online or in-person, for more in-depth support.
