Working in partnership to develop students’ skills and attributes for learning.
One of the primary aims of our services for Education is to work in partnership with programme teams and module leaders to embed teaching within the curriculum that supports students to develop their skills for learning. We work with programme teams to integrate and contextualise skills development where it will have the most impact for student learning. The aims of our approach
- work with programme teams to embed academic and information skills development within all taught programmes, at key points in the student journey, tailored to the discipline and cohorts.
- support active and scaffolded learning, creating online learning that enhances any timetabled sessions.
- be formally situated in student timetables for context and engagement.
Our areas of expertise
- developing independent learning and critical approaches, setting learning goals, using information critically, including Generative AI, and taking responsibility for the learning journey.
- developing and communicating ideas, from seminar participation and collaboration, to written and verbal communication, and reading and note-taking.
- the writing process, sustainable writing habits and different styles of writing - academic, technical, scientific and reflective.
- assessment literacy and the assessment mix - presentations, videos, posters, group assignments, exams and revision, essays and reports.
- dissertations and research projects, from writing assessed research proposals and finding the information, primary sources and data that underpin research, to creating critical literature reviews and discussions.
- planning effective searches, selecting information resources, using specialist databases, archival materials, understanding and interpreting primary sources, and approaches to Systematic Reviews.
- managing information including referencing, integrating sources, reference management software and using information with integrity.
Academic Engagement Librarians
The Academic Engagement Librarians are experts in helping students develop the informations skills they will need for their learning development journey, advising on information search plans, effective search techniques, and where to look for information for assignments and research.
Academic Skills Team
The Academic Skills Team supports students at all levels of study to fulfil their potential by helping them to understand university level learning and assessment and working with them to develop the academic skills for their context through embedded teaching, individual support and online resources.
Education Outreach and Transition Team
The Library's Education Outreach and Transition team support prospective students in developing the study skills they need to complete their A-Levels and successfully transition into HE, providing workshops and online resources that will help them navigate their academic studies.
Special Collections and Archives Team
Special Collections is an exciting resource for teaching. Our team offers a range of flexible options to support modules using our rich, unique and distinctive collections. From stage 1 undergraduate to postgraduate research, we can facilitate or deliver sessions that provide opportunities for students to acquire and practise transferrable primary source research skills. Or we can support modules with subject-specific content where we have relevant collections.
