World War I: The Impact of the Great War on the North East

This workshop invites students to learn about how WWI affected people in the local area through unique primary sources like photos and letters.

About this workshop

In this workshop, your students will use primary sources from Newcastle University Archives and Special Collections to learn how the First World War affected people in the local area. They will read letters written by local men who ‘joined up’ and found themselves living and fighting in trenches or flying planes above the battlefields.

There’s also the option to make this into a full day workshop by adding a guided walk around the campus, learning about how some of the University buildings were used during the Great War and looking at war memorials, before finishing off with an artist-led session in the Hatton Gallery in which students will create their own art work inspired by material from the archives. Please note this is subject to availability.
