Independently Marked Assignments in Canvas
What is your moderation workflow?
Assignments can be moderated in Canvas. The most appropriate approach depends on how marking and moderation are carried out. Please see the sections below for guidance.
Single-marked assignments
-
Each assignment submission is marked by one marker.
-
The moderator checks all submissions or a representative sample of the marked work.
-
This can be achieved using a standard Canvas or Turnitin assignment.
-
The moderator requires Teacher access to the Canvas course. This allows them to access all marked submissions and view all marker comments. If required, they can amend a student’s grade in Canvas SpeedGrader or in the Turnitin Assignment Inbox.
-
Any change to a grade is recorded in the Gradebook history. Please note that there is no download option for the Gradebook history.
-
If the moderator needs to record notes, this can be done by adding a Notes column in the Gradebook. Notes are included when you download data from the Gradebook.
Independently marked assignments
-
Each submission is marked independently by two or more markers.
-
The moderator determines the final grade for each submission.
-
This can be achieved using a Canvas assignment with the Moderate tool. Further details can be found in the Independently Double Marked Assignment with Canvas Wayfinder.
-
Independently double-marked assignments are supported using the Graders cannot view student names setting.
-
The moderator must have Teacher access to the Canvas course and be selected as the grader that determines the final grade in the assignment settings.
-
Once final grades have been agreed, the moderator releases them to the Gradebook.
-
Records of individual marker grades and the final grade can be viewed by the moderator or by any member of staff with Sub-Account Admin access to the course.
-
If the moderator needs to record notes, this can be done by adding a Notes column in the Gradebook. Notes are included when you download data from the Gradebook.
-
The full workflow for double-marked assignments is explained in the Double Marking with Canvas Assignments Wayfinder.
