Study Overseas Opportunities
We encourage our students to take a global study opportunity as part of their degree studies.
You can take part in an overseas study experience or international exchange programme during your programme. For further information see our Study Abroad flyer. Options depend on your degree programme and can be within your programme, add an extra year to graduate on a programme ‘with International Study Year’, or taken outside of studies, but include:
- a semester as part of a taught programme,
- a semester of Biomedical Sciences at our NUMed Malaysia campus
- a summer placement,
- a research project at a partner University,
- an International Study Year
- a short-term global mobility
- a virtual exchange.
We provide support via our Exchange Coordinators within the School (Biomedical and Biomolecular, Sport and Exercise Science, and Nutrition), to guide you in finding the right opportunity at the right time for you. Our global ambassadors are on hand to give you advice and insight on what studying overseas is really like. Students returning from overseas study provide great insight and top tips about their time overseas, which helps future exchange students plan ahead.
Global exchange partners
Our university partners with universities all over the world so that our students can exchange places for studies and have a global cultural experience. We have subject-specific exchange partners across Europe and internationally who we have matched our programmes with, as well as more abroad University-level partnerships with more flexibility of subjects. University of Waterloo in Canada Exchange
My name is Tania, and I spent 2 semesters at the University of Waterloo in Canada. I was very wary in the beginning about my exchange but looking back at it now I have zero regrets about going. I had such an amazing year, surrounded by other exchange students from all over the world. There were many events planned to meet other students that integrating into the University life was no issue. I got to experience a different culture and teaching that I would have never had the chance to do. If you are considering a year abroad but are stressed, I say look past your worries and do it!! It was a one in a lifetime experience for me:)
Study Abroad Year - Lund University Sweden
My name is Liam, and I spent a year studying abroad at Lund University in Sweden. It was certainly a scary thought at first to move to a brand-new country but looking back now, I’m so glad I decided to take the opportunity. Lund is a great place for international students and offers many opportunities to meet people from a wide range of different backgrounds. My year abroad also gave me the chance to travel to many amazing places during my free time. Experiencing a different culture and style of teaching was a valuable experience and helped prepare me for my final year at Newcastle. If you’re unsure whether studying abroad is right for you, I would urge you to do the same as I did and take this once in a lifetime opportunity!
How to Decide
We can help you consider where you want to go in the world, for how long and what you want to study. In your first year we explain all the options and the applications timeline so you have plenty of time to decide and prepare. Our in-School Exchange Coordinators can provide more details and would guide you through the choices available, application and nomination through to selecting what you study. As these are our partner Universities and we exchange students, you still pay your tuition fee to Newcastle for any study-based exchange. Our Global Opportunities team will guide you through pre-departure preparations, so you are organised for your exchange.
Our Global Opportunities team manage our University-wide partnerships (for a full list of where you can go, check out their GO Abroad pages) and they provide support and guidance. They also advertise short term mobility opportunities which can be a few weeks or more and usually outside of term time. You can also study languages for free alongside your programme through our University-Wide Language Programme and access support through the Language Resource Centre
