Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

Newcastle university is well-known for its Chinese-English translation and interpreting courses. It also has a strong reputation for academic excellence and practical relevance.

The course focus on both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience appealed to me. I wanted to build a solid foundation, while also developing the skills needed for the world of work.

The city of Newcastle itself has a lovely atmosphere. It’s vibrant, welcoming and full of character, making it a great place to live and study. The combination of a top-tier course and a supportive environment made Newcastle University the perfect choice for me.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career? 

My course has been helpful in preparing me for my career in several practical ways. It taught me core techniques essential for entering the industry.

It also improved my ability to work with people from different cultures. This skill has been useful in a global and fast-paced environment like ByteDance. Additionally, the course introduced me to an alumni network – a great resource. This network has helped me find opportunities within the translation field.

Overall, I feel grateful for the skills and connections I’ve gained. They have been a big part of my professional growth.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University? 

I secured the opportunity to intern as a Simultaneous Interpreter at the UN office in Vienna. This experience was both enriching and inspiring. I also provided translation services for training at the Northern Leadership Training Centre. This gave me the opportunity to support executives from the universities of Newcastle and Xiamen.

One of my most cherished achievements was serving as the Student Orator at my graduation. Working with the congregation office to create a compelling speech was an unforgettable milestone in my life.
