Project Description

The cost analysis methodology developed for this research used the images and data gathered by Rome Transformed and its predecessor, the Lateran Project. The materials, techniques and labour required for the construction of the castra nova and Lateran Basilica were identified and a range of modules comprising each structure defined. The cumulative totals of the modules were used to estimate the total logistics effort demanded by each construction, and those present in both structures were compared. The construction estimates illustrated the different scales of construction and methods used, and the composition and extent of the building materials available and how these were exploited.
