Combatting homesickness and making friends

Starting university is exciting but can also feel overwhelming at times. Feeling homesick or out of place is completely normal, especially when you’re settling into a new city and a new routine. This guide offers practical tips and support to help you feel at home, make friends, and connect with the Newcastle University community.

Starting university is an exciting new chapter: new city, new people, new opportunities. But it’s also completely normal to feel a little homesick or out of place at times. Whether you’re missing family, friends, or just the comfort of home, you’re definitely not alone. Most students feel this way at some point. The good news? There are lots of ways to settle in, make connections, and start feeling at home here at Newcastle University. Here are some tips to help you find your feet, make new friends, and feel more connected to your new life in the Toon.

Get involved in ResLife events

One of the best ways to meet people and feel part of your community is by attending ResLife events in your accommodation’s social spaces. From quiz nights and pizza parties to wellbeing evenings and craft sessions, there’s always something going on and everyone is welcome.
Events are advertised on Instagram, in your weekly newsletter, and on the ResLife webpages, so keep an eye out. You never know who you might meet.

Stay in touch with home

When you’re feeling homesick, it helps to stay connected with family and friends back home. Schedule regular phone calls, video calls, or messages. Sometimes just hearing a familiar voice can make a big difference. Try to balance that connection with getting involved in life at Newcastle. Staying in touch is healthy but give yourself space to build new routines and friendships.

Chat with your ResLife student assistants

Feeling low, lonely, or just want a friendly chat? Your ResLife Student Assistants are here to help. They are fellow students who have been in your shoes and are trained to offer peer-to-peer support on everything from homesickness to flatmate issues. They are usually around in social spaces on evenings and weekends, ready for a chat or a game.

Join a ReConnect session on Teams

Every Monday and Friday, you can join a ReConnect session on Teams with your ResLife Coordinators. These informal drop-ins let you chat about your wellbeing, studies, or just how your week is going. It is a relaxed, no-pressure space to connect with friendly faces.

Get involved with NUSU clubs and societies

NUSU clubs and societies are a great way to meet friends. Whether you enjoy football, film, food, or photography, there is something for everyone. You can meet like-minded people, try new things, and develop new skills. With over 200 societies, it is the perfect way to connect outside your flat or course.

Take part in the peer mentoring programme

Newcastle’s Peer Mentoring Programme pairs you with a returning student from your academic school. They can offer advice, answer questions, and share their experiences. They know what it is like to start fresh and can help you feel more connected socially and academically.

Beat the winter blues

Newcastle can get cold and dark in the winter, which can affect mood and energy levels. Lift your spirits by:
• Getting outside during daylight hours
• Keeping your space cosy with blankets, cushions, and photos from home
• Making plans with friends, even small things like a coffee or movie night
• Trying light exercise or joining a fitness class
Remember, spring comes around quicker than you think

Explore Newcastle and the North East

Make the most of your time here by exploring the city and beyond. Plan adventures with flatmates, visit the Quayside, Tynemouth, or Jesmond Dene. Not every event has to include drinking — there are many ways to socialise, from visiting art galleries to trying new cafes or hiking the coastlines.

Use TalkCampus when you need to chat

If you are feeling low or need someone to talk to, TalkCampus is a free app where you can connect anonymously with students worldwide. It is a safe, supportive space to share how you feel anytime, anywhere.

Be kind to yourself

Adjusting takes time. It is okay if you do not feel settled straight away or if it takes a while to find your people. Celebrate small wins, like cooking your first meal, getting through the first week of lectures, or chatting to someone new. Every student’s journey is different and that is completely okay. You will get there.

Final thoughts

University life is about learning — not just academically, but about yourself, others, and the world around you. Homesickness is normal, but there are many ways to make Newcastle feel like home. From ResLife events and peer mentoring to clubs, societies, and friendly chats with Student Assistants, there is always someone to talk to and somewhere to belong.
Reach out, get involved, and remember — you are not alone. You are part of the Newcastle community.
