Surviving exam season: Revision tips & coping with stress

Exam season can feel intense, but you don’t have to face it alone. Whether you’re revising in the library, juggling deadlines, or navigating your first University exams, we’re here to help you stay balanced, focused and supported.

8 October 2024

Exam season at Newcastle University always seems to sneak up faster than expected. One minute you’re moving in, and the next, you’re surrounded by lecture notes, half-empty coffee cups, and the glow of your laptop screen.
But don’t panic. Exams don’t have to mean chaos. With the right balance, routine, and support, you can get through this period feeling calm, capable, and maybe even a little proud of yourself.

Here are some tried-and-tested tips to help you through revision season, along with a few reminders from your friendly ResLife team.

  1. Stay active: Move your body, boost your brain

When the pressure mounts, sitting at your desk for hours might feel productive, but your brain needs movement to perform at its best. Go for a walk around campus, visit the gym, or take a stroll down to the Quayside. Getting fresh air helps clear your head and keeps your concentration levels high. Even ten minutes of movement can reset your focus.

  1. Reach out for support: You are not alone

If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, don’t bottle it up. Reach out.
You can:
• Give home a quick call for a reassuring voice.
• Pop down to ResLife for a chat. The Resident Student Assistants have been through it all too, so they understand.
• Speak to your Resident Life Coordinator who can signpost you to the right University support service.
You’re never alone here. The Newcastle community is full of people ready to listen and help.

  1. Download the Forest App: Beat the doom scroll

We’ve all been there. You sit down to revise and somehow end up on TikTok instead of your notes. The Forest app can help you stay focused by growing a virtual tree whenever you keep off your phone. The longer you focus, the bigger your forest becomes, and it’s surprisingly satisfying. A great way to avoid the procrastination spiral.

  1. Know your exam venues: Avoid last minute panic

Don’t add unnecessary stress on the day. Double-check your exam venues ahead of time. Find out where you’re sitting, how to get there, and how long the journey takes. On the day, arrive early in case of transport delays. It gives you time to breathe, settle in, and feel ready.

  1. Pack smart: Bring the right Exam accessories

Before the big day, make sure your calculator meets exam specifications. Bring spare pens as they always seem to run out at the wrong moment. Double-check any items you’re allowed to bring and pack your bag the night before so you’re not rushing. Don’t forget your student ID.

  1. Get creative: Use flashcards and highlighters

Active revision is far more effective than passive reading. Use flashcards to test yourself and highlighters to make key points stand out. These tools keep studying engaging and help information stick.
Top tip: ResLife runs giveaways during exam season where you can pick up flashcards, highlighters, and other study essentials for free. Keep an eye on their socials or drop by your Social Space.

  1. Plan ahead: Get a calendar going

Organisation is your secret weapon. Use Outlook, Google Calendar or go old-school with a wall planner or diary. Schedule your study sessions, exam times, breaks and social events. Having a visual plan helps you balance work with rest, and both matter equally.

  1. Don’t forget to socialise

Revision is important but so is staying connected. Seeing friends gives your mind a break and can help reduce stress. Join in with ResLife social events like Pizza Nights or Cake and a Break session. They’re perfect for recharging, chatting and remembering you are part of a community supporting you every step of the way.

Final Thoughts
Exams might be stressful, but they don’t define you. Take things one step at a time, keep perspective and remember that you’ve got this. You also have a whole University behind you.
So gather your notes, grow a digital tree and make time for pizza. Revision season is tough, but with the right balance of effort, rest and support, you’ll come out stronger and maybe even a little wiser.
