I am from València (Spain) and I joined Newcastle University in 2010 after completing my PhD at the University of Nottingham.
I am a cultural studies scholar with a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining cultural history, visual studies, and memory studies. I focus on contemporary Spanish and Latin American cultural production from the 20th century through the 21st century. Trained as a literary scholar, I have complemented my early philological education with a visual culture formation in graphic narrative, memory studies, intermediality, and the analysis of periods of crisis. I was Co-PI with Patricia Oliart for the Marie Curie Horizon2020 research project Cultural Narratives of Crisis and Renewal (2015-2018), involving 63 researchers from 8 institutions in 6 countries in Europe and Latin America. In my first monograph, Vanguardia y humorismo gráfico en crisis, I studied the development of avant-garde graphic humour in Spain and Cuba during two critical periods, the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the Cuban Revolution. My interest in comics led to a co-edited volume titled Comics and Memory in Latin America (Pittsburgh, 2017), published also in Spanish in 2019 by Cátedra. I am co-investigator and I sit in the management committee of the international research project (COST-EU funded) entitled COS-MICs (Comics and Sciences through Multidisciplinary Investigation and Collaboration) COST Action (CA24160). My latest publication, Cómics y Guerra (2025), is an open access didactic guide aimed at secondary school students, exploring the relationship between war and comics through the lens of memory studies.
