Access state-of-the-art facilities within the School of Modern Languages.

Our facilities

The majority of teaching at the School of Modern Languages takes place in the Old Library Building, right at the heart of campus.

As a student here, you’ll have access to a wide range of specialist facilities and resources designed to support your learning.

Language Resource Centre

Our Language Resource Centre grants you access to a variety of resources, including:

  • 80 PCs equipped with language learning software
  • 25 satellite channels in 16 languages
  • 15,000+  foreign language films and documentaries
  • online English language study materials
  • distance and online learning resources

Conference Interpreting Suites

We have two purpose-built conference interpreting suites in the Old Library Building. There is also an industry-leading interpreting booth in the Frederick Douglass Centre (FDC).

These suites incorporate a state-of-the-art digital conference interpreting system, used for:

  • training professional interpreters
  • remote interpreting
  • hosting international conferences, which our students support via interpreting services
  • recording speech materials
  • recording individual interpreting performance
  • re-playing recordings for self-evaluation

Master's students have access to an interpreting suite outside of scheduled classes, so that they can practise and improve.

Multilingual conference suite

The premium multilingual conference suite is a state-of-the-art facility. It is designed for both specialist teaching and commercial hire. 

Key features include:

  • Televic conference system with DANTE audio channels
  • translation and interpretation suite
  • 10 ISO-standard interpreting booths
  • integrated conference desk
  • two large display screens
  • voice-activated PTZ cameras
  • high-resolution screens
  • in-person, hybrid and remote conferencing with simultaneous interpretation in up to 10 languages
  • seamless interaction between in-person and remote participants
  • optional English-Chinese bilateral interpreting service

Inside a Translation and Interpreting Suite

 

The suite is ideal for commercial bookings because it provides:

  • flexible, professional-grade facilities for events of all sizes
  • on-site support and access to university services
  • suitability for international business meetings, multilingual conferences, training sessions and diplomatic events

The suite and FDC are also available to university departments and external clients. These resources are ideal for those seeking a high-quality, multilingual conferencing solution.

Frederick Douglass Centre

For high-capacity events, Newcastle University also offers a 750-seat auditorium at the FDC. This venue includes its own dedicated interpretation booth, making it ideal for:

  • large-scale multilingual conferences (the FDC facility supports interpretation in up to 11 languages)
  • summits
  • international forums

Speech Repository

The Speech Repository is an e-learning tool. It is used to help improve the quality of conference interpreter training. It was set up at the initiative of DG Interpretation (SCIC), European Commission.

The repository system includes public speeches from national and international organisations, such as:

  • the European Parliament
  • the European Commission
  • national parliaments

European Commission Webcast Portal

The European Commission Webcast Portal:

  • streams events taking place at the European Commission
  • provides quality streaming from both inside and outside the premises
  • contributes to transparency and multilingualism policies
  • disseminates the Commission’s proceedings to European citizens

Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA)

You can find CIFA on the second floor of the Old Library Building. It's open to students, researchers, and the general public.

CIFA is the world’s largest publicly accessible archive dedicated to independent Chinese cinema. CIFA houses over 900 independent, Chinese-language films.
