I am eager to support students having learning needs in a creative, and holistic manner to raise their engagement and to improve the outlook of their educational journey. With more than 13 years of teaching experience at international diversified settings, I demonstrate a genuine passion for teaching and learning.

Project Description

My PhD project emphasises that one of the most striking issues in dealing with de-westernising, and southernising of journalism education is, English medium instruction (EMI) and its impact on quality of education. In this age of global Anglicisation at tertiary level, EMI is one of the main concerns in the teaching learning process, especially in the non-Anglophonic global South. This study has three aims – One, to identify the EMI-associated difficulties in the teaching learning process of journalism education. Two, to develop a non-Anglophonic global South model for journalism education. Final, to enhance the overall quality of journalism education. The EMI challenges in journalism education in the non-Anglophonic global South, have not been well investigated and addressed; to achieve the aim of this study, Ethiopian journalism education is taken as a case. A mixed method design is used collecting questionnaire responses from 223 students, 55 teachers, and conducting semi structured interviews from 15 Class Representatives and 5 Head of the Departments at five universities in Ethiopia. The results are also validated with autoethnography of the researcher. The findings highlight EMI-associated challenges in curriculum, course-materials, classroom practices, teacher’s preparedness, affective issues and language proficiency in journalism education.  Based on the empirical data, a non-Anglophonic global South model of journalism education is proposed.
