Introduction
I am a Consultant Paediatrician in Allergy and Immunology at The Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Clinical - I specialise in complex severe multisystem allergic disease with our current programmes focusing on Food and Asthma Allergy prevention focusing on treatment at home, in a digital manner to prevent, whilst trying to cure, disease.
Research - I am also a Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Medicine where I am a Chief and Principle Investigator within the themes of Reproduction, Development and Child Health Research (PHSI) and Immunity and Inflammation (TCRI and BI).
I read for my PhD under the tutelage of Professors Graham Roberts, John Holloway, Tony Williams, Hasan Arshad (Southampton University) and Catherine Thornton (Swansea University) (2018) on 'Immune tolerance in early childhood'. I continue to develop an understanding of childhood allergic diseases with an interest in immune tolerance, dysbiosis and Th2 related allergic inflammatory disorders.
We develop and deliver phase I/II/III portfolio Clinical Trials within the ORECHESTRA Programme of the Great North Children's Hospital Research Community (GNCH-RC), translating the development of new diagnostic immune mechanisms, immunotherapy and novel targeted therapies into clinical practice.
Education - Together within the 'Model of Seamless Allergy Care', we improve clinical care and delivery to our patients within the Research and Education of Allergic Disease in Children (REACH) programmes.

Outline
The Research and Education of Allergic Disease of Children Programme (REACH) focuses on increasing the understanding of childhood allergic disease and translating cutting edge clinical discoveries to support the development of new diagnostic immune mechanistic platforms and targeted therapies.
Within the three Institutes of the Faculty of Medicine Sciences, our teams work together to improve the health, care and well-being of children with allergic disease. In collaboration with the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) of the Great North Children's Hospital Research Community (GNCH-RC) we bring our research to the clinical interface.
Our 'Origins of CHildhood Eosinophilic and Systemic Related Allergic Disease' Programme (ORCHESTRA) moves into the second decade with the following Work Packages namely:
Current ORCHESTRA projects
- ADAGIO - Atopic Disease with Allergic Gastrointestinal Inflammatory Origins
- ALLEGRO - Allergic Eosinophilic Disease with Gene Related Origins
- SYMPHONY - Symbiotic and Microbiome origins of Nutrition in the Young
- MEDICI - Mechanisms of Eosinophilic Th2 Disease In Children from Infancy
- PIANO - Psychological Impact of Allergic Disease and Nutritional Obstacles
- SCALE - Symptoms and Clinical manifestations of Allergy
The Clinical and Translational Research team
Within the Theme of Immunity and Inflammation, scientists, academics and clinical researchers collaborate with a goal to increase awareness and understanding of allergic inflammatory diseases. Alongside the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, and collaborations with the Universities of Liverpool, Kings College London, Southampton, Imperial College and Manchester University, we aim to translate laboratory findings into new diagnostic platforms. Current MRES Newcastle University projects are diverse with our basic science team collaborating with the GNCH- Research Community and GNCH Clinical Research Facility to develop and support epidemiological, observational and interventional studies. Our programme for 2026 evolves around allergy prevention, in the community, on a digital platform.

Contact us | Research and Education in Allergic Disease of Children (REACH)
We believe teaching and networking are vital to bring the very best clinical practice and research to our region and beyond.
We support the Medical School, Newcastle University undergraduate stage 4, Student Selected Component (SSC) and Masters of Research (MRes) Programmes.
Regionally and locally, the Newcastle Allergy team continue to actively support the Northern Paediatric Allergy Group (NPAG) uniting research and education to the 8 District Hospitals of the North East.
The 'Research and Education of Allergic Disease of Children Programme' (REACH) focuses on three strategies:
- REACH-OUT - 'Model of Seamless Allergy Care' to outreach to the primary and secondary care to promote the education and training of allergic disease.
- REACH-FAR - Faculty of Allergy Research for all who wish to be involved from school students, to local or international research students to PhD level of tutelage to have digital educational access.
- REACH-IN - GNCH Fund raising platform for Department of Paediatric Allergy as part of GNCH Foundation Charity.
Since 2013, I remain involved in academia and research as a full time clinical paediatrician. As previous Chair of NPAG and current Vice President for Services of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, I remain committed to develop and enhance the REACH Programme, to champion the current 'Fit for Future' campaign of NHS England i) from hospital to community, ii) from analogue to digital and iii) from sickness to prevention.
