James is a Research Software Engineer with a background in artificial intelligence, wearable-sensing, and digital health systems. He joined the Newcastle University in 2025 following a three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Kingston University and Salutem Care and Education, where he led the end-to-end development of an AI-driven distress detection system for autistic adults in residential care.
James holds an MRes in Healthcare Technologies from King’s College London and has specialised in deploying machine learning models using physiological data from wearable sensors. His work spans full-stack development, including mobile applications, RESTful APIs, and cloud infrastructure. He has also delivered applied research outputs, regulatory engagement, and real-world pilots in complex healthcare environments. Earlier projects include developing a digital toolkit to support women during the preconception period and assistive technology for people with mild cognitive impairment.
At Newcastle, James works with academic, clinical, and industry collaborators as part of the NIHR-funded Patient Safety Research Collaboration (PSRC), developing robust, user-informed software solutions to support applied research into patient safety during transitions from hospital to home.
