Training and support

The Faculty has a training and support programme for involvement and engagement to support our researchers to do good quality, meaningful work with the public.

We offer a range of resources and events to support your training in different types of engagement activities.

Internal members of staff can view our training programme and resources on our Engage FMS NUConnect SharePoint site and our NUConnect Training SharePoint site.

Newcastle Health Research Partnership and FMS training

Newcastle Health Research Partnership have launched their new Resource Bank on the Newcastle Health Research Partnership website.

This space has been developed to support and extend your learning as part of the Public Partnership Training Programme. It gives you access to helpful tools, templates, and materials you can explore in your own time.

Featured resource: Health Literacy Training Videos

One of the key additions is our set of health literacy training videos, which offer practical insights into making health information more accessible and understandable. Whether you're new to the topic or looking to build on what you already know, these short videos are a great starting point.

  • Step-by-step guides
  • Links to further reading
  • More resources being added regularly

Cell Detectives training academy

Have you got an interesting research project the public deserves to know about? Are you looking to get involved in outreach/engagement but don’t know where to start? Then come along to the Cell Detectives Training Academy!
The Cell Detectives have joined forces with the FMS Engagement team. This is to deliver a unique training programme. The programme is mainly aimed at researchers who have no or little experience of engagement and would like to do more.

The Cell Detectives are an FMS outreach group that performs outreach and engagement events for young people and their families across Newcastle. They go to schools, museums, and public events to get young people interested and engaged in science, especially the amazing research performed right here in Newcastle University. They have microscopes, 3D printing, and most importantly a huge wealth of experience designing and delivering outreach events for all ages.

The training will consist of:
· Initial 2 hour lecture
· Individual/group workshops to brainstorm, develop, and bring to life your outreach ideas, creating tangible outputs for you to use in public engagement
· Test run
· Reflection
The first session of the Cell Detectives Academy will be on Wednesday the 26th of November (13:00-15:00) followed by individual sessions over the next couple of weeks, and then a final session in January (date and time tbd).

University-wide training programme

The University Engagement and Place team provide an annual training programme of events.

They have a brilliant Resources page which includes everything from payment guidance to communicating research resources, to editing software and outreach guides.

Internal colleagues can also join our University-wide Engage and Learn Teams site. This is where we post the latest updates on events and training across the University.
