Welcome to the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics new students' induction page.

Induction programme

Welcome and Induction week starts on Monday 15th September 2025.

Teaching starts on Monday 22nd September 2025.

Accessing your induction materials

New Undergraduate Students:

All Stage 1 students will be expected to be on campus for induction, to attend timetabled sessions and events. Your first session will be as follows:

  • All students on Maths programmes (G100, G103, G200, GG13, GGC3, G1N3, G1N4, GL11, NG41)
    • Tuesday 16th September, please arrive at 10:00am, for a 10:15am start, Ground Floor, Herschel Building.
  • All students on Physics programmes (F300, F303, F344, F345, F3F5, F3FM)
    • Tuesday 16th September, please arrive at 10:45am, for a 11:00am start, Ground Floor, Herschel Building.
  • All students on Foundation Year programmes (G101, F304, H101)
    • Monday 15th September, please arrive at 10:00am Ground Floor, Herschel Building.

New Postgraduate Research students

Please contact your Supervisor to arrange an initial meeting to take place within the first few days of arrival if possible.  A laptop will be available for your use throughout the programme of study. Please contact maths.physics.pg@newcastle.ac.uk to arrange a time for collection and be provided with arrangements for hot desk/ office space. A tour of the building will also be available to you.

Checklist

It's essential that you complete a number of activities by the end of induction week. You should make sure you complete each of these actions:

Complete your online registration

You must complete your online registration via the Student Portal. This is where you can request a Council Tax Certificate or a bank letter.

Collect your smartcard

Your smartcard gives you access to the library, sports centre, other University facilities.

Access your University email and Canvas

You should check your University email daily for updates relating to your studies.

It is also important to review the module and programme information provided on Canvas.

Visit the Philip Robinson Library

You should familiarise yourself with the Philip Robinson Library and its resources as you will need to make use of these throughout your studies.

Register with a Doctor

Newcastle University is committed to encouraging all students to register with a Doctor upon arrival.

If, like most students, you spend more weeks of the year at your university address than your family's address, you are advised to register with a doctor near University as soon as possible. Please see the link here
