Staff Profile

Can Berk (John) Saner received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2024. Prior to joining Newcastle University, he was a postdoctoral researcher at NUS from 2024 to 2025. He also holds MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and in Engineering Business Management from the University of Sussex. He received his BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University.

His research interests focus on the application of mathematical optimization and machine learning-based methods to power system operation, planning, and coordination in smart grid environments, with particular emphasis on EV-grid integration and smart charging.

Dr. Saner is a member of IEEE and served on the Executive Committee of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Singapore Chapter from 2023 to 2025. He also holds a visiting researcher position in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ozyegin University, Turkey.
