Richard Stockwell
Associate Lecturer
I am a playwright and screenwriter.
I have also been teaching scriptwriting for over twenty years.
My first play Killing Time toured the country in 1998. The play was produced somewhere in the world every year for twenty years in several languages.
After that I wrote for Eastenders for two years for the BBC. A variety of plays have followed including Bad Blood (National Tour) Continuum (Live Theatre) The Prize (Edinburgh Festival - Live Theatre) me too (Alphabetti Theatre) Future Shock (The Lowry, Salford) Terminal (Ink Festival, Suffolk)
Before teaching at Newcastle University I worked at Northumbria University where I established and ran the Drama and Scriptwriting programme for fifteen years. I am a Senior Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.
My most recent work is a scriptwriting text book, Scriptwriting for Theatre and Screen: A Practical Guide which was published in 2025 by Routledge.
I have been closely involved in research into creative writing teaching and I was a member of the QAA panel that wrote the inaugural subject benchmark statement for Creative Writing - I am a Senior Fellow for the Higher Education Academy.
My plays have been published by Samuel French and Oberon Books
I currently teach undergraduate screenwriting and postgraduate Theatre Writing.
