Beyond speech: wider communication difficulties in people born with cleft lip and palate
4th March 2026, 12-1PM, King George VI Building, Lecture Theatre 5
Speakers: Stephanie van Eeden, Newcastle University
Abstract:
This seminar examines key factors shaping speech and language outcomes in children born with cleft lip and/or palate. Drawing on clinical experience and emerging research, it explores how attention profiles, sleep quality, and phonological awareness each contribute to communication trajectories. The session highlights current evidence on how these domains may influence speech sound development, expressive and receptive language skills, and everyday communicative functioning. The seminar aims to inform holistic assessment practices and guide targeted interventions within cleft speech and language care.
