Background

I am Professor of Anatomy (Teaching and Scholarship) in the School of Dental Sciences, to which I bring around fifteen years of experience across anatomy and medical education, clinical skills, curriculum leadership, simulation, widening participation, digital learning, and academic governance gained from working and collaborating across several internal departments and external bodies.

I joined Newcastle University in 2011 and have worked across both the School of Medicine and the School of Dental Sciences ever since, including three years seconded to our Malaysian campus, where I served as Dean of Academic Affairs (MBBS) and Director of Education (all programmes), as well as simultaneously as Interim Dean of Student Support for a year, before returning to Newcastle to take up my current post. Earlier roles here have included Director of Academic Studies in the School of Dental Sciences and a long involvement in the MBBS programme at the Medical School.

I am a National Teaching Fellow, one of the highest accolades for teaching in UK higher education, awarded to only around fifty-five individuals across the sector each year. I am also a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA) and a Fellow of the Anatomical Society (FAS). My teaching has been recognised at Newcastle with two Teaching Excellence Awards, in the distinct categories of pastoral support and of supervision, and two Vice-Chancellor's Education Excellence Awards, in both the individual and the team categories. My team also won the Engagement and Place award for our public engagement contributions in the sector. I was also named the Anatomical Society's New Fellow of the Year in 2023.

I am closely involved in the wider anatomical and medical education community. I am Honorary Secretary and Chair of the Prizes and Awards Committee at the Anatomical Society, a UK-based charity with a worldwide membership, to which I have contributed at many levels for over eleven years. I also sit on the Anatomy Associations Advisory Committee, an umbrella organisation for anatomical societies in the UK providing guidance to the sector on relevant regulatory matters, and the UK Clinical Reasoning in Medical Education committee, the latter reflecting my longstanding interest in how we teach clinical reasoning to keep patients safe. I currently examine externally for the University of Aberdeen and for postgraduate medical education at the University of Nottingham, and I contribute internationally as a delegate to the European Federation of Experimental Morphology (EFEM) and the International Federation of Associations of Anatomy (IFAA).

Teaching

Teaching is at the heart of what I do. For much of my career in academia, I have taught across the medical programme, delivering gross anatomy and clinical skills to MBBS and other healthcare professionals students at every stage of their training. Since my transition to the School of Dental Sciences, I moved into the more specialised and (personally more) rewarding area of teaching head and neck anatomy to dental and dental hygiene students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Whilst I teach the full breadth of gross anatomy, head and neck anatomy is where my particular expertise and enthusiasm lie, taught with an emphasis on the clinical relevance that dental students need to carry into practice. Alongside my anatomy teaching, I have contributed extensively to clinical skills, clinical reasoning, interprofessional education, medical simulation, and widening participation, and I make active use of digital tools and technology-enhanced approaches to bring the subject to life.

My teaching is closely informed by my own scholarship and by collaboration with experts across the field. With Professor Stephen McHanwell, Professor of Anatomical Sciences and a National Teaching Fellow, I co-authored the chapter on teaching anatomical sciences to dental students in Teaching Anatomy: A Practical Guide, the standard reference on how anatomy is taught, where ours is the chapter devoted specifically to dental education. With Professor Vinidh Paleri, Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at The Royal Marsden and Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the Institute of Cancer Research, I co-authored the chapter on the anatomy of the pharynx and oesophagus in the eighth edition of Scott-Brown's Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, the standard reference for ENT and head and neck surgeons the world over, as well as a companion chapter in Symptom Oriented Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Writing with one of the country's foremost head and neck cancer surgeons ensures the anatomy I teach is grounded in the realities of the operating theatre, where a precise understanding of these structures is fundamental to patient safety. I also led the Anatomical Society's Core Anatomy Syllabus for Dental Undergraduates, published in the Journal of Anatomy, which sets out the anatomical knowledge dental graduates need and directly shapes how I structure what I teach.

My scholarship on technology in medical education, including chapters on the hidden curriculum of imaging and unregulated digital resources and on the pedagogy of technology within medical curricula, both in Springer's Biomedical Visualisation series, informs the digital and simulation-based methods I bring into the classroom. I have also written more widely for teaching and public audiences, including Anatomy: A Crash Course and contributions to popular medical science titles.

I am committed to inclusive, engaging teaching that meets students where they are, and much of my educational work is grounded in widening participation and in supporting students pastorally as well as academically. I regularly supervise student projects and value the way students' own perspectives sharpen and enrich my practice.

Research

Alongside my educational research interests, I have contributed to the reference literature of the anatomical and clinical sciences. With Professor Stephen McHanwell, Professor of Anatomical Sciences and a National Teaching Fellow, I co-authored the chapter on teaching anatomical sciences to dental students in Teaching Anatomy: A Practical Guide, the standard reference on how anatomy is taught, where ours is the chapter devoted specifically to dental education. My work on the role of technology in medical education, including chapters in Springer's Biomedical Visualisation series on the hidden curriculum of imaging and unregulated digital resources and on the pedagogy of technology within medical curricula, examines how digital tools are reshaping the basic sciences curriculum and what that means for patient care.

My scholarship sits firmly in anatomy and medical education, and is driven by a wish to make curricula more inclusive and more thoughtful about the tools we use to teach. My interests include decolonising the anatomy curriculum, the role of artificial intelligence in anatomy and medical education, digital assessment practices, and the explicit teaching of clinical reasoning. I have shared this work widely through the Anatomical Society, the Trans-European Pedagogic Anatomy Research Group (TEPARG), EFEM, and IFAA, often in collaboration with students, whose perspectives have shaped much of what I do.
