Tell us about your internship

I have just completed a 50-hour summer internship at Serios Group. Serios Group is a data Solutions company, and as part of my internship, I worked on a data insights project for a new product that the company is developing. This involved large quantities of data, and processing/organising them in Power BI to create visual dashboards. My goal was to create a series of dashboards that replicated drafted visuals, to contribute to the offering of the new product line.

Why were you interested in doing an internship?

I was interested in doing an internship, in order to gain experience in a new workplace to develop my skills, and also to learn more about the data sector and the potential roles that it includes. This is a sector that I am interested in going into after university, but didn't know much about/had little experience of. This internship was invaluable in discovering what the industry is all about, and without it I would probably not be considering a potential career in the industry.

What support did the Careers Service give you with your internship?

The Careers Service helped me organise the internship, help log my activity and ensure I was getting on well throughout the 50 Hours. Also, in a slightly random situation, two members of the careers team were very helpful when I visited the Careers Service onsite, whilst participating in a company-wide offsite team building Day! Katherine and Jack were both extremely friendly and helpful in answering questions about the Careers Service, as I was tasked to conduct market research on educational institutions. I really appreciated their quick-fire answers, and taking time out if their days to help me out!

What have you got out of your experience?

I have learnt multiple workplace and business lessons, which I otherwise wouldn't have learnt without this internship. I have potentially discovered a career path that I was initially intrigued in, but am now very interested in pursing! My communication and quick learning skills were tested and have developed in the past two weeks, and I have a much higher overall confidence about the workplace, and settling into a role post university.
