Jameson Tate
An internship supporting our programme for International Welcome Week gave Jameson experience of working on a large scale project.
Tell us about your role
I recently completed a 230-hour internship at Newcastle University as an International Welcome Intern. My responsibilities included organising all of the events and services that go into the International Welcome Week, such as the airport meet and greet service where I helped with packing welcome bags, planning coach routes and staffing based on arrivals, as well as creating and producing all of the marketing material.
I was also responsible for the Information Fair and the International Welcome event where I designed and presented talks on aspects of moving abroad for new international students, planned and organised an event catering within a budget, designed and produced all physical and digital marketing, article writing and designed floor plans for the Events.
What did you gain from the experience?
I was interested in doing an internship as it was an amazing opportunity to develop my professional skills and experience. I chose to apply based off of my own experience as an international student living abroad and how vital it is for this internship to help new international students when they have just moved to a completely different country with a limited support network.
The Careers Service provided me with detailed interview preparation and support leading up to this internship. They were incredibly good at shaping my interview technique and CV, helping to maximise my chance of standing out from the rest of the candidates that applied for the role.
This internship has taught me project management, marketing, problem-solving and attention to details skills. I believe that working on a project of this scale has made me well prepared for a graduate job.
